NRL 2020: South Sydney Rabbitohs centre James Roberts checks into rehabilitation facility
South Sydney Rabbitohs centre James Roberts has checked himself into a rehabilitation facility as he struggles with the COVID-19 crisis.
Roberts reportedly admitted himself to rehab two weeks ago to help deal with his mental health following private discussions with South Sydney officials.
The club released a statement on Tuesday confirming the news, reaffirming that they would stand by the 27-year-old.
"Rabbitohs player James Roberts has entered a facility to undergo treatment to assist with and support his health," they said.
"On behalf of James and his family, we ask the media and the public to respect their privacy.
"No further comment will be made by the Rabbitohs, James, his management or his family at this time."
Roberts signed with the club 12 months ago, opting to leave the Broncos on compassionate grounds in order to return home to Sydney with his young family.
However, his issues with substances have been well documented, with the speedster checking into a Thailand rehab facility in 2016 to deal with alcohol and drug abuse.
Roberts was also spotted being drunkenly carried out of a Brisbane nightclub last year, with his former club, the Broncos, opting not to sanction him at the time.
He was eager for a strong 2020, telling Sporting News in February that he was feeling fitter than ever after a full pre-season.
“It’s good to have a full pre-season, get the head right I suppose and get the confidence back," he said.
"My body is feeling pretty good, and I can’t wait to play some footy.
"My main objective now is to win a comp, tick that box and that’s all I’m focused on."
