While some people are able to consume limited amounts of alcohol without incurring significant or lasting damage, others can quickly become ensnared by the compulsion to ingest this drug more and more frequently and in increasingly larger amounts. Known clinically as alcohol use disorder, and commonly referred to as alcoholism, alcohol addiction can wreak significant damage on virtually all aspects of a person's life. When a person becomes addicted to alcohol, he or she will find it difficult or virtually impossible to make it through the day without drinking, and will develop tolerance, which means that he or she will need to consume greater amounts of the substance in order to experience the desired effects. Individuals who develop an alcohol addiction will not be able to stop or limit their alcohol intake, even after experiencing negative repercussions related to their behavior. When a person who has become addicted to alcohol tries to stop drinking, or is unable to acquire alcohol, he or she will experience a series of distressing and potentially dangerous physical and psychological symptoms. This is known as withdrawal.

For individuals who have been incapable of ending their alcohol abuse prior to starting treatment, detoxification provides a safe and supportive environment where they can complete the withdrawal process and prepare their minds and bodies to fully engage in therapy. For those who have completed or who do not need detoxification, the most intensive level of care at Sierra by the Sea. While in residential care at our program, men and women will participate in a wide range of therapeutic interventions including individual, group, family, and experiential therapies. Residential clients also benefit from around-the-clock supervision and the safety and security of living in a closely monitored sober environment. Our programs also offer step-down support via partial hospitalization programs (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP).
