What to consider when choosing an addiction treatment facility
There is a lot to consider when choosing an addiction treatment facility that's a good match for you or a loved one's needs. With so many places to choose from, the options can be overwhelming.
Here are some factors to consider when choosing the best addiction treatment facility.
Look out for unethical listings
Make sure the person you're speaking to on the phone works at the treatment center you are trying to reach. There are many faulty call centers and treatment providers that use branding and search engine optimization to make it look like you are calling one treatment center when you are contacting another facility, hotline, or center instead. They then refer you to a treatment center provider that will compensate them with no thought or care given to the quality of treatment.
CARF Accreditation
Research the facility to ensure it is an accredited organization like CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehab Facilities). A one year and a three-year CARF accreditation are very different. A three-year accreditation means that CARF has had an on-site visit with the facility to examine every asset of the program carefully. They have looked at personnel and training records, staffing ratios and clinical caseloads, clinical standards, and policies and procedures.
So, if you ask if the program is accredited, and the response is, "Yes, we have a three-year CARF accreditation," you will know that the facility has been vetted inside and out. You can familiarize yourself with the different levels of accreditation by visiting their website.
Services
It's essential that the facility has the services your loved one needs. Check to see if the facility has a full-time medical team. Some providers will contract with doctors and nurses to work on-site for a few days a week. You want to ensure that you're loved one gets the medical detoxification they need and is surrounded by doctors and nurses 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
You may also consider aftercare, which is an essential facet of any reputable treatment program. Do they have full-time case managers or aftercare coordination that will establish direct referrals to follow-up treatment and care? Whether it be a referral to a mental health provider, primary care physical, or sober living, this not be left up to the client to decide.
It's not easy admitting that you need help. However, it's the first and most crucial step to recovery.
